This 14 Day Papua Birding Expedition combines four of West Papua’s most rewarding birding regions: Nimbokrang, Arfak Mountains, Malagufuk, and Waigeo. Designed for serious birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, this journey offers a remarkable diversity of habitats—from lowland rainforest and foothill forest to mossy montane slopes and island ecosystems. Each destination delivers unique species, spectacular scenery, and excellent opportunities to encounter multiple Birds-of-Paradise.

The adventure begins in Nimbokrang, one of the best lowland birding areas in Papua. This region is well known for its accessible forest trails and high bird diversity. Here we search for lowland specialties, including kingfishers, pigeons, parrots, and a variety of passerines. Seasonal migrant birds also occur in this area, adding excitement and unpredictability to every outing. Early morning and late afternoon sessions provide the best chances to observe active forest birds.

From the lowlands, the expedition continues to the Arfak Mountains, a world-famous highland birding destination. The cool montane forest is home to spectacular species rarely seen elsewhere. Highlights include Western Parotia, Vogelkop Bowerbird, Magnificent Bird-of-Paradise, and a variety of endemic honeyeaters and berrypeckers. Traditional hides and forest trails allow close observation of displaying males, making Arfak one of the most memorable birding experiences in Papua.

Birding in Arfak also offers encounters with unique highland wildlife and beautiful mountain landscapes. Mossy forests, tree ferns, and flowering shrubs create perfect habitat for specialty species. The slower pace of birding here allows time to enjoy behavior, photography, and the incredible sounds of the montane forest at dawn. Every day brings new discoveries in this biodiverse highland ecosystem.

The journey then moves to Malagufuk, a rising birding hotspot famous for its five species of Birds-of-Paradise. This lowland forest area offers excellent chances to observe Lesser Bird-of-Paradise, King Bird-of-Paradise, Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise, Magnificent Bird-of-Paradise, and additional regional specialties. Carefully selected display sites provide unforgettable early morning experiences as males perform their courtship dances.

Malagufuk also hosts a variety of colorful forest birds including parrots, fruit doves, hornbills, and monarchs. Quiet forest trails and river edges provide diverse habitats, increasing species counts throughout the day. This location is ideal for photography and prolonged observation, making it one of the highlights of the expedition.

The final destination is Waigeo Island in Raja Ampat, globally known for two iconic species: Red Bird-of-Paradise and Wilson’s Bird-of-Paradise. Carefully timed visits to display sites offer strong chances to witness their extraordinary courtship performances. Waigeo’s island forest also supports parrots, cockatoos, pigeons, and many endemic subspecies found only in Raja Ampat.

This 14-day expedition delivers an exceptional combination of lowland, montane, and island birding. With Nimbokrang’s diverse lowland species and migrants, Arfak’s highland endemics, Malagufuk’s five Birds-of-Paradise, and Waigeo’s Red and Wilson’s highlights, the trip offers one of the most complete birding experiences in Papua. It is an unforgettable journey through some of the richest bird habitats on Earth.
