The Taman Wisata Alam Gunung Meja is a protected forest rising just behind the coastal town of Manokwari. Despite its proximity to the city, the area feels surprisingly wild, with dense lowland rainforest, limestone hills, and quiet forest trails. This natural reserve acts as a green sanctuary where visitors can step from urban life directly into Papua’s rich biodiversity.
Gunung Meja is well known for its accessible wildlife encounters. Early morning walks often reveal birds calling from the canopy, while butterflies move along sunlit paths. The forest structure, with tall trees and thick understory, creates ideal habitat for many species. Because the area is protected, wildlife remains relatively calm, making observation easier compared to more disturbed forests.
Birdwatchers are especially drawn to this reserve. Kingfishers, parrots, and pigeons are commonly seen, while patient visitors may encounter birds-of-paradise in quieter sections. The mix of hill forest and lowland habitat supports a diverse bird community. Dawn is the best time, when mist hangs over the forest and the calls echo through the valleys.
Reptiles and amphibians are also part of the Gunung Meja experience. Tree frogs cling to leaves after rain, while skinks and small lizards bask along open trails. Night walks reveal geckos, insects, and other nocturnal life. The limestone terrain creates hidden crevices and humid pockets, perfect for species that prefer stable, shaded environments.
The forest is not only about wildlife but also unique vegetation. Towering trees, pandanus, climbing vines, and moss-covered rocks create a layered jungle atmosphere. During the rainy season, fungi and orchids appear along the trail, adding color to the dark green surroundings. The canopy filters sunlight, giving the forest a calm and cool feeling even during midday.
One of the highlights of Gunung Meja is its accessibility. Short trekking routes allow visitors to explore without long expeditions. Local guides often know hidden spots for wildlife, viewpoints, and quiet observation areas. Because the reserve sits close to Manokwari, it works well for half-day or full-day nature trips.
Taman Wisata Alam Gunung Meja remains an important refuge for wildlife near the city. Its combination of easy access, rich biodiversity, and peaceful forest atmosphere makes it a valuable destination for birding, herping, and nature photography. Whether visiting at sunrise or exploring after rain, the reserve offers a glimpse of Papua’s natural beauty just minutes from town.
