Day one usually begins with arrival and transfer into the mountain villages, where traditional huts overlook pristine forest. Afternoon birding along roadside edges and forest trails introduces you to specialties such as Mountain Peltops, Vogelkop Bowerbird, and flocks of colorful honeyeaters. The first evening often includes a short walk for nocturnal species, where owls and frogmouths may be heard calling in the cool mountain air.

Day two is dedicated to one of the main highlights—searching for Western Parotia at its display grounds. Before sunrise, you hike quietly to the lek and wait as the forest slowly comes alive. With luck, the male performs its famous “ballerina dance,” raising its skirt of feathers in an incredible courtship display. This morning can also produce sightings of Black Sicklebill, Arfak Astrapia, and various highland parrots moving through the canopy.

Later on day two, birding continues along moss forest trails where mixed flocks are common. You may encounter tit berrypeckers, long-tailed paradigallas, and the striking Ornate Melidectes. The diversity in a small area is impressive, and the peaceful atmosphere of the highland forest makes the experience both productive and relaxing.

Day three focuses on different elevations and habitats to maximize species variety. Early morning visits target Magnificent Bird-of-Paradise and Superb Bird-of-Paradise display perches. Between sessions, birders explore gardens and secondary forest where colorful species like Island Leaf Warbler, Red Myzomela, and Papuan treecreepers are frequently seen.

Afternoon birding on day three often produces some of the more elusive species. Patience may reward observers with Satin Bowerbird activity, Lesser Ground Robin, or even a shy forest rail. The changing light across the valleys creates beautiful photography opportunities while still adding new species to the list.

The final day offers a relaxed morning birding session before departure. This last opportunity often surprises visitors with species missed earlier, as flocks move through the area once more.
