South Misool Nature Reserve

South Misool Island Nature Reserve spans an impressive 115,056.64 hectares and is administratively located within Misool District and Southeast Misool District of Raja Ampat Regency, West Papua Province.

Landscape & Geography
The topography of South Misool varies from flat to wavy terrain, with hills and rocky formations extending from west to east, forming the island’s central ridge. The area is dominated by primary dryland forest, providing a pristine habitat for diverse wildlife. Several rivers flow through the reserve, including the Kasim River in the north and the Gamta River in the south.

Geology & Soil
Missol Island is characterized by sedimentary rock formations from the Neogene and Triassic periods, with red podsolic soil inland and complex coastal soil compositions near the shorelines. These geological features contribute to the island’s unique landscape and biodiversity.

Flora & Fauna
South Misool boasts an incredible diversity of vegetation, including:
Merbau (Intsia bijuga, Intsia palembanica) Matoa (Pometia sp.),
Bugis tree (Koordersiodendron pinnatum), Banyan tree (Ficus spp.), Dysoxsylon species, Various mangrove species, including Rhizophora apiculata, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, and Soneratia alba.
The reserve is home to 159 recorded bird species, including four species of Birds-of-Paradise. Other notable wildlife includes:
Protected birds: Yellow-crested Cockatoo, Victoria Crowned Pigeon (Goura victoria), Palm Cockatoo, Black-headed Lory, Maleo, and White Stork.
Mammals: Tree Kangaroo, Bandicoot (Echymipera kalabu), Sugar Glider (Petaurus breviceps), and Forest Wallaby (Dorcopsis veterum).
Bats & Butterflies: Five species of bats and numerous butterfly species thrive in this ecosystem.
Endemic species: Red Bird-of-Paradise, Wilson’s Bird-of-Paradise, and the Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise.
