Our journey to find Varanus reisingeri began as a true wild expedition into one of Papua’s remote villages. Together with our colleague and fellow wildlife enthusiast, Chris Applin, we set out to explore the habitat of this fascinating tree monitor and learn more about where and how it lives in the wild. Our destination was Limalas Village, where we hoped to find Varanus reisingeri in its natural environment. From the moment we arrived, however, we quickly realized that the timing was not ideal the rainy season had arrived, and tree monitors were much less active than we had expected.

Rather than giving up, we spent time discussing our main goal with local people and learning from their knowledge of the area. The local community gave us some promising information and signs that Varanus reisingeri could still be found nearby. This gave us new motivation to continue searching. For several days, we explored the surrounding forest, checking suitable trees and potential habitats while patiently waiting for the right opportunity. Every day brought new challenges, but the excitement of discovering this elusive monitor kept us moving deeper into the habitat.

Finally, after several days of searching, our effort paid off. We found Varanus reisingeri actively hunting high in a coconut tree. Watching this beautiful monitor moving through the tree and searching for food in its natural habitat was an unforgettable moment. Seeing it behaving naturally in the wild made the long days of searching completely worthwhile. It was exactly the kind of encounter we had hoped for when we began this expedition.

But the adventure did not end with Varanus reisingeri. Limalas Village also showed us incredible potential for other wildlife, including Green Tree Pythons, Amethystine Pythons, and many other reptiles and amphibians. The birdlife was equally interesting, adding another exciting dimension to the expedition. This journey reminded us that wild expeditions are not always about immediate success it is about patience, local knowledge, exploration, and the excitement of discovering wildlife in its natural habitat. Our expedition with Chris Applin was an amazing experience, and Limalas has certainly given us a strong reason to return and continue exploring its incredible biodiversity.
