This 14-day expedition is designed to discover four of the world’s most unique tree monitor species across the islands of Raja Ampat. Traveling through remote forests and pristine coastlines, the journey combines herping, wildlife observation, and optional snorkeling in some of the richest marine ecosystems on Earth. Each destination offers its own rare species, dramatic landscapes, and unforgettable encounters.
Batanta Island is the first major focus, home of the iconic blue tree monitor, Varanus macraei. Trekking through lowland rainforest and coastal vegetation, the search takes you deep into wild habitat where these striking lizards live high in the canopy. Batanta also offers excellent chances for green tree python, birds, and other endemic reptiles.
Salawati Island provides a completely different environment, where the elusive Varanus prasinus inhabits dense forest and mangrove edges. Night walks and early morning searches increase the chances of spotting this emerald arboreal monitor. The island is also rich in frogs, geckos, and nocturnal wildlife that make every outing exciting.
Misool Island is the stronghold of Varanus reisingeri, one of the most sought-after tree monitors. The journey here explores karst forest, coastal jungle, and remote valleys. Encounters with green tree python are also possible, along with a variety of birds and unique island reptiles.
Waigeo Island completes the expedition with Varanus boehmei, another spectacular arboreal monitor. The forests of Waigeo offer diverse habitats, from limestone hills to lowland jungle. This area is also well known for its reptiles, mammals, and rich birdlife.
Each island visited during the expedition offers opportunities to find green tree python. These beautiful snakes are often encountered during night walks, coiled on branches or hunting in the understory. Their presence adds another highlight to an already exceptional reptile-focused journey.
Beyond reptiles, the expedition showcases the incredible biodiversity of Raja Ampat. Expect orchids, tropical forest scenery, birds, insects, and untouched landscapes. Remote villages, quiet beaches, and dense jungle create a true wilderness experience throughout the trip.
As an additional activity, spectacular underwater life is available at several locations. Snorkeling in crystal-clear water reveals coral gardens, reef fish, and vibrant marine ecosystems. This combination of rare wildlife, beautiful nature, and world-class snorkeling makes the 14-day expedition a complete Raja Ampat adventure.
