The Journey Begins

Our first day of the echidna expedition began with high hopes and eager hearts. We explored deep into the forest, carefully searching for signs of this mysterious and elusive creature. The forest was alive with sounds — birds calling from the canopy, insects buzzing after the rain but the echidna remained out of sight. By the end of the day, we had only found a few fresh footprints pressed into the damp soil, a teasing sign that the animal was nearby.
Determined not to give up, we continued our search on the second day. This time, we decided to explore the lowland area around Malagufuk, where local villagers had recently spotted an echidna. We left early and reached the area at around 7 in the morning, guided by the stories and directions of the villagers. The forest here felt different dense, quiet, and full of mystery.
The Moment of Discovery

With growing curiosity, our team began to move slowly, scanning the ground and listening carefully for any movement. Hours passed, and just when we were starting to think we might have to try again the next day, something incredible happened. Around 10 a.m., a sudden rustling near a fallen log caught our attention. We approached quietly, and there it was an echidna, calmly digging through the forest floor in search of food.
Everyone was filled with excitement and disbelief. Seeing this rare and shy animal in its natural habitat was truly a moment to remember. It was a reminder that patience and persistence always pay off in wildlife exploration. After two days of effort, our final target had been achieved and it was worth every step.
If you dream of experiencing rare wildlife encounters like this, join us on our next expedition. We organize special tours to explore the wild side of Papua and Raja Ampat, searching for unique species such as the echidna, tree monitors, pythons, and more.
